The Breaking Heart

The sound haunts me

With a soft step, a ghostly laugh

Echoing in my ears as I stumble through life.

It is far away from me,

The distant past sneaking up

Behind me and plunging me back to the moment.

The moment I heard her heart break.

Her sharp intake of breath

That speared me through the chest

And twisted up the fear, pain, agony, terror.

Her deep sigh

That shook the earth and caused

Blood to pound through my veins with a righteous fury.

And then the earsplitting silence

That filled my mind with an angry buzzing,

And created a paused moment,

A stilled moment,

A terrified moment,

The moment I heard the hearts break.
