Breaking My Chain

"True forgiveness is when you can say, 'Thank you for that experience.' " ~Oprah Winfrey

I forgave
because my first reaction of anger,
I didn't contain.
Never displaying sorrow or pain,
Which soon became
My unbreakable chain.

I forgave
because I no longer wanted that chain
to continue being a part of me.
So that hurt could no longer remain.
So I can be free.

I forgave
because I wanted to advance,
So that I could have a chance,
Instead of being
In these hauling linked-rings,
Harboring all these things.

I forgave
because I wanted to recover
From every minute,
You tore me down.
Each time I would discover,
That you'd benefit
From the secrets you kept.
As keeping them, was your adept.

But you didn't deserve my forgiveness.
This wasn't my weakness,
And i'll never take back anything,
Not even a single moment of suffering.

Yes, I forgave.
And from then on,
The chain broke,
I was no longer a slave
Within myself.
