Breaking From My Cocoon

Living in a big world,

I was once a stubborn child.

I closed the door from reality

and played for a little while.

I once didn't care about the world,

or what people thought of me.

I enjoyed living in a cocoon

where I could be carefree.

Nothing lasts forever

as the years passed.

Memories were stored in boxes,

and my cocoon was breaking at last.

As I was growing up,

I learned to open my mind

and accepted different ideas

in this changing time.

From taking criticism

to questioning my beliefs,

I became independent,

a wonderful relief.

From doing laundry

to living in a dorm,

Responsibilities came and went

as they became the norm.

Making tough decisions,

I survived through the day,

improving my writing and school work

every step along the way.

At first, I was uncomfortable

for entering into real life.

Anxiety surrounded me,

hitting me in one fight.

I felt like giving up

like a house ready to collapse,

but I kept my chin high

and moved forward from the past.

Now everyday is a journey

that I treasure in my heart.

I retain my childhood memories

as I already come this far.

Breaking from my cocoon,

I shoot for the sky.

I am now an adult

as I tell my younger years goodbye.
