Breath
Teaching someone how to breathe is like running without feet
Its like chasing something that doesn't move
Its like being someone who’s not you
Poetry taught me how to breathe
It became my oxygen
My sky
My rhythm
And my rhyme
It became the music for my soul
It became the best friend that I can’t let go
It became my heart that won’t stop beating
It became my luck that won’t stop giving
when I lay the pen to paper
When I touch my fingers to the keyboard
My breath begins to slow
my body begins to let go
My toes uncurl and
my fists unclench
I’m now in a different world
one that is detached from the lies
the false hopes
the bad dreams and
the “no”s
In poetry I am limitless
I am who I chose to be
I am my own judge
I am me
