Broken Reflections

This morning I looked into the mirror,

And what did I see?

There was nothing at all

Staring back at me.

I waited and waited,

But I guess she went to find,

Something better

Then what I had seen in my mind.

I should have guessed,

Maybe I was wrong,

When I criticized her beauty

For far too long.

I said she was ugly,

She’d never be okay.

I said I hated her smile,

It always went away,

She was gone for a while,

And I saw what I had missed,

For everything I hated.

She marked on her wrist.

She came back today,

And I finally could see,

She beautiful the way she is

This girl I saw is me.
