Broken Relationships

Our relationship began to fall apart the first time you lied to me about your sister trying to kill herself.

I shouldn’t have stayed. I felt sorry for you, so I did.

A few days later, I woke up to the fluorescent light of my phone brightening your face in the darkness of your bedroom. I asked you why you were searching through my stuff. You asked if I had anything to hide.

My sister said I deserved better. That I deserved someone who trusted me. I deserved someone who didn’t search through my belongings because they saw me talking to another boy in the hallway.

But I stayed because I loved you.

I couldn’t take anymore about seven months in. I just couldn’t. You stopped me from hanging out with my friends, no matter the gender. You questioned my every move. You called me a bitch when I threatened to tell my older brother all the things you did to me. And I let you do it. I came to realize that this wasn’t what I signed up for. This wasn’t what I wanted.

So I left and the note I left for you on the kitchen table in your apartment said it was because I loved you, but now I’m not so sure.
