Brokenness

All it took was a text message three lines long,

An emoticon and a compliment before the NO!

Like a pretty dress and comfy bed before the gunshot.

My stomach dropped and the light left my eyes,

I felt a tiny knife stabbing my heart.

The heart that has already been bandaged more times than I can count.

But the worst thing of all; the emptiness:

It fills me up from my head to my toes.

My hands stop typing and when they do start again;

Lies pour out of them.

Conceal, do not show what you are feeling

 Hide your tears and put on that mask

The one you spent so long developing

The one that you hung up because you thought you would not need it again

Grab it off its hook and dust it off

It will need some adjusting but you will get used to it

After all it's only been gone for a couple months.

Add a few more walls around your shattered heart;

After you sweep up the pieces and delicately place them back together again.

You are broken and hollow and tired,

Just plain tired;

Of emotions and friends and love.

You cannot help but wonder... is love worth being broken?
