Building Blocks

I drop to my knees,

scraping them on the brick

red carpet, and I grab a handful of the pieces

with tears streaking my face, landing

gently on the surface of what used to be.

My creation -- fragile and vulnerable --

lay shattered like glass

due to his powerful stride.

I looked up to the

towering figure above,

knowing now that he stands

for far more than just

himself.

My body begins to shake

from something other

than sobbing. Red fills

the lids of my eyes, and a sea

of black floods my heavy heart,

causing the vessel

to sink wearily.

I wish I could say

this was the last time

I let my foundation

go unguarded,

but the sad truth

is this would become

a normal occurrence

that would break me

a little more each time.

Once more, I collect

what is left and begin

to rebuild.
