BURGEONING TRIBULATION
Sufi Asaata Springer (16)
Burgeoning tribulation
I’ve learned about Lewis
I’ve learned about Clark
I’ve learned of their history about every part
But thinking of mine that’s where it goes dark
While my people were taken and forced to embark
I know of Columbus
I’ve heard about Lincoln
But not of the chains that they had us linked in
Nothing of what my ancestors tackled
Except for the fact their ankles were shackled
When it comes to their past they’ve never been blinded
Our lessons in history are always one sided
white ancestors legends we’re always reminded
But it’s nothing but whispers when it comes to what mine did
What about Malcolm?
What happened to Douglass?
Or the thousands of others who fought for our justice
What happened to Tubman?
Or Ida B. Wells?
And the knowledge that told us they stood up for themselves
What about Hurston ?
Or Robert S. Abbott?
Individuals who reached for success and they grabbed it
We’re more than our skin
We’re strong and courageous
Our faith is undying our strength is contagious
So know their faces know their names
These are the ones who changed the game
Our ancestors spoke up without hesitation
And decided to be linked by their liberation
