Burn
Dear, not “the one”,
I lit myself on fire to warm you when you were cold.
When we were drowning, I breathed air into your lungs as i suffocated in the deep blue.
When I stopped setting fire to my soul for you,
When the warmth I created no longer surrounded you,
There was a change.
Your heart turned cold.
Or maybe it was always that way
And I had a habit of hurting me to sustain you.
But I couldn't live that way,
Burning myself everyday so you could have life.
When I decided it was time to breathe for me and not for you,
When I decided to enable my life and not yours,
There was a change.
You shut me out, you closed the door on me.
Or maybe you were always that way
And when I breathed air into your lungs I also breathed words, thoughts, and feelings that were entirely my own.
But I couldn't live that way,
Changing the person you were to who I wanted you to be.
