Burned

I remember back when my mama said, Right before we went to bed, If he loves me he’ll come back, Tears were shed for the love you lack. Daddy you left me when I was young and frail, Wondering if you’re dead or locked in jail, Come home finding mommy crying on the floor, With you gone our hearts are sore and tore. Think you can just skip out on us, Leaving us when you climb that bus, I have a message for you dad, When you left you left me sad and mad. You come back, some years later, Walk in the diner and find the waiter, You ask for me and I see you come, I wonder where you’ve come from. Your hair streaks grey and you’ve grown a beard, Your clothes are dull and your smile’s weird, Walking up to me you stumble on your feet, I stiffly help you up and find you a seat. On your breath is the smell of beer, It hurts to have you so near, This reunion isn’t as planned, No walking in the sunset, hand in hand. You slur your apologies and get my name wrong, Trying to sell me your excuses about being gone so long, But daddy I’ve grown up and I’ve also learned, The anger you’ve left in mom and I, will leave you burned.
