Burning Bridges
3am thoughts are designed to be dreamlike
And fragile, fantasy structures harbored in the
Subconscious beyond the laws of gravity.
But mine are a weight on my chest, because
I’m still awake…and my brainwaves are a static
Buzz with thoughts of you.
It was arson that burned our bridges.
And we can never get back to the nights
When we would stay up late on the couch in your basement –
Trading secrets and soliloquys –
And you would look at me and make me feel…beautiful.
Those nights ended with a kiss goodbye on the
Shadowy porch step and
Creaky front doors –
But now the doors are shut, baby, and
I’m on the wrong side.
You broke down my defenses, just to see if you could.
Do you delight in your hard-won prize?
Stay up late with thoughts of me, long for me,
Reach your hands out across the water to the green you see on the other side before remembering…
You can’t swim?
And that I’m just a daisy who was picked and discarded?
I’m crashing and burning without you.
And I’m trying to inhale the smoke and
Get back to the high we had when we were together…
Maybe if I close my eyes…baby if I close my eyes…
Then I’ll dream of you, where you’re locked in with all my past mistakes.
And you’re the biggest of them all.
You’re my favorite little fuck-up.
God, you were a sin and a temptation and my goddamn inspiration,
But for a muse,
You’re more a poison in my veins and a private hallucination.
A side effect and a trip from sneaking out to smoke
Passion cause god would we light up and burn.
But after all, it was only smoke.
And we’re up in smoke – just adding to the pollution that’s clouding out the heavens.
I guess that’s why they call it star-crossed.
So pass me a match – this is an intervention.
If we can’t get back to the fire we had, at least we can watch something else go up in flames.
Just like the bridges that burned down when we used to set the town on fire,
And you were more than just ashes in my memory.
