Butter
My butter tasted like
chocolate covered coco kisses
Bundled up & covered in love
When i walked by, the world knew.
My scent transcended descendents
They could smell my independence
It was true, for them, they preferred to be indifferent
But as my aroma navigated into their nostrils they could never negate my niceties
Good African girl
Raised in the 90s
Hair smelled like KEM and chemicals
Just Like Me & Just Like Music
Candy coated rain drops and candy coated ring pops, professing my love to my school busstop sweetheart
He made my heart melt with the messages inscribed on sweettarts.
An essence crafted way back in the days when ebony magazines would jet off the shelves
An essence equated to the music in nawlins
Ancestors yawning
Waking up at every mornings dawning
Putting essential oils into the next few generations
So potent that when i walk in the room sometimes you can still smell the cotton
Maybe even taste that bit of guilt itching at the back of your throat
No there's no elephant in the room, just your unrequited pennance
French toast burns in the next room
But i love the smell of cinnamon
Sugar. Syrup. Honey.
Oh honey.
Oh good god good woman
Whatchu cooking in that kitchen?
Smells like family. Like tradition.
Like 1 2 steps & electric slides.
Smells that remind you of your first whooping/scolding/washdemdishes
Soap drying out your fingers
Grease splattered on the ceiling.
All along these smells molding me into women.
Butter.
Tasted like.
Chocolate covered coco kisses.
Ya smell me?
