Caged Bird
Behind bars, your wings clipped you cannot escape
You are singled out and abandoned, alone
No one to talk to, nowhere to run, you hide and keep quiet, your spirit shattered.
You stare out the bars and the fence at your owners running lose basking in the sunset, hoping, dreaming.
You count the days until your flock is back until you too can fly free, one day soon you can chase your dream.
You find ways to face the day, the seed that they are feeding to you are stale and old, your feathers lose their shine.
You wonder if you're forgotten by those who you used to fly the world with, those who said they loved you unconditionally.
They brand you in the markings of their own, and they clip your wings in hope to change who you are, to reform you
The ones who are with you cannot be trusted, and they will turn on you in hopes for a taste of freedom that every other raven that you see craves,
You are the same yet different; you are not the raven that they think you are, you are a dove, needing constant reassurance, constant praise.
You keep your head down so no one can hear your song, the sweet sound you miss
One day you will have the cage open, and your flock will find their way back to you, then you too will fly free and sing your sweet, sweet song.
Your shine will return, and you will blossom into the bird that you were supposed to be.
