Caged Hummingbird
Placed in a cage
On a world that’s staged
Front and center
In one’s display
Groomed to self-humiliate
Self-berate
Self-sabotage
You know all the ingredients
Of one’s self-loathing
Self-hate
On display
A hummingbird
Placed in one’s cage
Voice eventually taken away
Wings clipped
Dreams of singing
Stripped
Obtaining trepidation
Cultivating hesitation
Attaining desperation
To hide
A voice so captivating
Humming in silence
Fighting with herself
Trying to innerstand
This running and hiding
It’s not a matter of
If she can sing
It’s the realization
Of the trauma
It did bring
The detriment
Enhanced self violence
Dismay
A hummingbird bird
Placed in a cage
Left with plenty sorrows
Many unwritten songs
Lyrics
Playing in her mind
How could such a gift
Or talent feel so unkind
A hummingbird placed in a cage
In the vicinity of mockingbirds
Deeming to steal her stage
Tone deaf
To their reality
Off key
A hummingbird placed in their cage
On their stage
With an immense amount of negative projections
Injections of preconceived notions
Suppressed emotions
For everyone to see
In search and hopes for better tomorrow’s
A hummingbird placed in a cage
Left to feel vulnerable
Dissociation her means to escape
A sense of vulnerability
She doesn’t desire to face
The anxiety makes her pace
Back and forth
Melodies and symphonies
Swirling around in her headspace
Thumping like the sound of a beating drum
“da-dum-da-dum"
Drum roll please…
Or the highest pitch of piano keys
Ears ringing with low and high frequencies
Losing sight of her voice’s authenticity and vibrancy
Can she just get some peace?!?
She drifts
Into the stars in the night sky
Something begins to shift…
Goodbye
Will the hummingbird ever replace the cage?
She just desires to fly faraway!
Humming hymns, riffs and runs…
Until she’s met with the rays of the golden sun…
Unsung
