The Caged Songbird

My life, and yours too,

Once meant something to me.

I fell in love, long ago,

Singing songs saying I’m free.

No longer was I encaged,

With darkness, great loss.

Singing my dreary song,

Or at least, so I thought.

I once was free to fly,

Fly to your arms, so true.

Until the day came where

I realized what I meant to you.

I was not that lovely breeze

Guiding you along your path.

I was not that lovely songbird,

Rather, you mocked me and laughed.

My love, my heart, my sunshine,

Meant nothing to your day.

Perhaps you’d also be fine

If I just flew away.

Just then my happy song

Once again filled with dread.

After all, I was not free, but caged,

And merely left for dead.

I once thought I was free,

So free to fly to you.

But then, you tossed and caged me,

Just as others had too.
