Calculus

The numbers begin

To float off the page.

They twist and turn,

Spinning out of control.

I try to catch them,

To make sense of them,

To figure out what

They mean.

But they begin

To fly,

Far away from me,

Away from their responsibilities.

I wish I could fly

With them,

Wherever they’re going.

They are free,

Free to be something

New, something different.

I’m stuck here,

Trying to catch them

Before they escape,

To force them to make sense.
