The Campfire
Burning
The wood smolders in the heat,
the fire eating it up
until it crumbles to ash beneath the pile.
Glowing
A variety of colors lights the dark,
casting shadows upon its surroundings
as the embers beat with the pulse of the fire.
Flickering
Flames moving back and forth
dance and sway in the night,
breaking the stillness with constant movement.
Crackling
Sounds echo in startling tones
as the fire finds its way into the wood,
popping and creaking under the pressure.
Wafting
Sweet smoke curls into the sky,
like a thin, gray snake
snapping at the stars.
Warming
The warmth on the skin is inviting
as one gets closer to the fire,
sensing the epicenter of heat in the night.
Roasting
Embers fly from the fire
while marshmallows slowly turn golden brown,
only to be gooey and delicious in the mouth.
Inspiring
As I gaze at the campfire,
I can’t help but feel a sense of wonder,
and of beauty as the flames dance in my eyes.
I look again at the scene around me,
and I am awed at the magic
of a little campfire.
