Cancer

My heart is black

Covered in dust, untouched

Smothered in ash

From pain that burns my soul

It’s hard to breathe

With lungs so oxygen deprived

My chest rises

Unable to grasp for air

I feel so weak

I can’t break my own fall

I beg for air

To soothe my lungs again

One breath means life

To further my tired soul

In order to beat

This monster inside me

I smoke once more

Because it soothes my pain

Nothing else works

I know I will die soon

My mind is weary

I’ve lost all my control

Death is coming

I’ve only time to prepare

I sit and wait

Smoke rings surrounding me

Pain increases

But I continue on

I keep on smoking

Until my lungs give in

One last sorry breath

Before I die a tragic death

My heart beats again

But only for the last time

I feel it with my hand

Until I fall to the ground

Regretting that last smoke

I watch the rings flow about

Lying there helpless

Until I close my eyes forever

The monster took control

It beat me at its game

I lost in withdrawal

My soul’s now its to claim

Lucky for me

I no longer suffer the pain

I’m a free soul

With no body to taint

I stare down at my body

I hate that I didn’t win

Smacking away a smoke ring

Drifting in the wind
