Cancer

Monday

Three hours on the clock

The night was almost over, no customers in the store

I was discounting expired candy

I heard the sound of crumpling bags and the discount gun

My phone buzzed

My heart dropped when I read the text from my dad

“Grandpa has cancer”

Sadness welled up inside me

Time stopped.

My sense of time and place stopped

My body shut down

And I stared out the windows

When one family member has cancer

It feels like we all have cancer, we shut down

But at that moment our family united
