The Cancer Wars

Massaging her back as she rocks desperately back and forth.

A heartbroken choke echoing through an empty house.

The comforting sound of harmonious voices chattering together,

to celebrate a sister they cherish.

A smile easier seen, without hair.

Debating on what can be done to make a nose flatten, in an attempt to imitate You-Know-Who.

Cinnamon bread delivered by a thoughtful neighbor every Sunday.

My Mom jogging slowly to feel the wind through her ‘hairs’ to keep herself cool.

A song played as a lullaby, to keep a restless Mom asleep.

This war was fought not with guns, bombs, and tanks

but with Service, Humor, Music, and Love.
