Cannot Live Without

The day starts off moving like a turtle, cautionary Slow and stationary, harsh light through windows The alarm is blaring, and I cannot fall back asleep. The bed is calling, I am falling back in a heap I walk to the refrigerator Looking for something to bring me back to life English Muffin and eggs, no, I could not possibly eat Scones and strawberries, no, too sweet. And then my eyes lock, fastening on The one thing to bring the morning back To wake me up, bring me back to life Hidden on the counter, next to the knife Swirls and sprinkles galore Crumbs and icing drops a plenty Sitting there, as if placed by God Making me thoroughly awed The thing I wake up for each morning I could not imagine if someone ate before If, waking up, I found it gone How would I go on? Better than coffee or an alarm Bringing me back to life, it always works like a charm I cut a large slice and, without a preface My chocolate cake, for breakfast
