Captive

Chills rattle my bones within my thin garments.

Days of old encapsulate my thinking.

As the fan's blades slice the air above me,

And the horns through the speakers blare,

I find myself melancholy once again.

A hostage bonded in one hell of a heaven,

Mourning the death of better days,

And ever longing for the sweet release from this prison;

Ever plotting my escape;

Ever wandering the abyss of the mysterious future.

Look closely, for a prisoner I appear not to be!

My cage is deceitful, lavish, & civilized!

No bars surround me!

Yet, I cannot leave this domicile.

I have not the freedom to roam.

The captains of this ship only tolerate me.

They do not enjoy forcing my stay.

Yet demand that I call this place home!

If home is where the heart is,

My home is miles away.

When free of chains and allowed to breathe,

I smile all the day long.

It is solely here that my countenance is slack;

Devoid of joy & tranquility;

Empty of life & love.

It is only you who robs me of my peace!

You are callous & abrasive,

Degrading yet unaware of who I am.

Possibly divine & maybe glorious, yes;

But towards me you send only stampedes of rage.

'Harden not thy heart' you say,

Unbeknownst to the fact that mine soil is fertile.

Without the thorns you cast into my garden, that is.

Ignorant to the truth that you make mine ground fallow,

You insist that I am to blame.

'One day I'll escape!', I tell myself daily.

'I'll be sent away in the mail!'

'Rescued by a knight in shining armor!'

Then reality sets in like a stain on white carpet,

And I continue my days as a captive.
