Carry On

My dad the giant

carried me on his shoulders

for the first day of school

when my fear was like boulders

too heavy to move

he knew what to do

My dad the responder

who was first to the scene

when I fell on the ground

and I injured my knee

as I cried in his arms

as he carried me

My dad the strong man

who carried my bags

as I left home for the first time

he held my hand

My dad the musician

Who can't carry a tune

but still sings and dances

when I'm feeling blue

and whose silly antics

can charm a whole room

And I know one day

when I'm old and gray

my dad will be with me

in a different way

though it makes me sad

the thought of him gone

I couldn't have asked

for a better one

my dad the legacy

and I'll carry it on
