Casual Conversation

Puffs of smoke emitted from his mouth,

As the cigarette dangled from his soft lips.

“It’s just an illusion you know,”

She turned to him and frowned.

“People,” he explained,

“You think they care. They say they won’t leave,

Make all sorts of promises. None of it is real though.”

She leaned back onto the grass,

“I love you, I care. That’s real.”

“Maybe in this moment it is,

But it won’t last.

Nothing with people ever does.”

The light at the end of his cigarette went out.
