a yelp a cold hand a swift kick I saw my neighbor's dog whimper softly with a shiver I cringed a yowl a shaky plea with one eye staring searching for food the other eye gone poked out by some stranger I pet his soft head into my home I bring the cat happy to do some good buttons massed I ring up help thinking of my neighbor's dog as my cat purrs his one eye watching me giving his approval I explain the problem hang up the phone and pray for creatures that I do not see
