Catfish

Deep in the muck lies a simple thing

With a simple goal in mind

But complex in its workings

Who knows what it dwells to do

A whiskered face about a gaping maw

Shallow eyes that bead above soft flesh

As fins softly drift as the body sits on the ground

Deep in the depths of a dark river

The creature lies there before with a sudden twitch

It is off with a startling briskness

Tail flashing side to side, as muscles tense

The fish then rises

And emerges to gape at a simple arm

Then it grabs on, and pulls down

And a simple person drowns

Why not start when it could be so

Why wonder and imagine when it lies there

This deep dark beast

Along the deep dark depths

Waiting and lurking

Yet the people contuine to swim

It twitches and rises

And someone comes back down

As the power pulls them away

And drags them to the depths

So why do they contuine

Why does this contuine

I don't know

But for something so simple

Who would have guessed

It could also drown you
