Kids in classrooms,

Glassy-eyed, miles away,

Not reading the words set down by heroes.

Heroes of the written page

Heroes of the times

Old and new, angry and hopeful;

The stories they see are nothing but verbs and nouns.

If they could see,

Only for a minute,

The colors of the tales

The adventure and mystery of those scratches on the page

Yet instead they sit

In classrooms,

Glassy-eyed,

Miles away.
