To Change

To change- it's a part of all of us

It's a piece of you and me.

If I could change a single thing,

I'd know what it would be.

It's how people look us-

The vengeance in their eyes.

Their snide, petty comments and claims

That are merely lies.

It's the utter disappointment,

Shock and disbelief

When you make a "lesser grade",

And how you should be overcome with grief.

It's the ridiculousness that I really want to put to rest

Because no matter how smart you are you can only try your best.

I hate people who don't know me say,

I'm so proud of you!"

And kids my own age say, "How many grades d'ya skip?

What'd'ya have to do?"

All I want for there to be,

Is no more inequality.

Not for people to differentiate me from a girl

Who'd make a simple "B".

I'm grateful that I'm gifted,

And talented as well,

And surely don't want my life's

Opportunities to dispel,

But I'm really tired of hearing,

"She's young so of course she'll get a good grade!"

Therefore, simply put,

I don't want enemies to be made.

I'm not asking you to take

Away our smarts,

But if I could change anything, it would be how its "us and them"-

That we wouldn't be separate parts.
