Change
Volunteering my time has been second nature to me since as long as i can remember, it is probably why i have no money and filling out multiple scholarships like a drug user looking for a fix. Rather than spending my time flipping burgers and cashing checks, i am at the front lines trying to change this world, a powerful and quick way to poverty. Most of my life i have been drawn to special needs individuals. The thought being "They didn't get their fair chance, i want to make their chance." I have volunteered at many special needs events but am a member of two different organizations promoting equality for special needs.
The two organizations i volunteer with are S.A.T.H. and J.U.M.P.
S.A.T.H. is an organization that funds a local camp for special needs children and teens called Kamp Dovetail. Before you say "Wow, this kid can't spell camp!" Kamp stands for Kids And Motivated People. And that is exactly what we are, motivated. Motivated to give everyone their fifteen minutes of fame, and show this world that we can make a difference together. Every year i see the struggle of different volunteers thinking "What have i gotten myself into?" and it is those same volunteers i see at the end of each week crying and hugging their client goodbye. But it's not goodbye, to them it is quite the opposite, we have opened a door for them and opened up their lives.
The other organization i volunteer with is the Jump organization. Similar to SATH, but Jump works with high functioning adults. Our mission at jump is to move forward, equality. One of the big issues we face is working pay, there is no minimum wage for special needs workers, therefore clients are being payed 0.32 an hour at some places of business. We work with clients to hone their abilities and perfect their trades, so they have a fighting chance in this nasty working society.
Volunteering my hours has changed my perspective, as you can probably see by my rant above. Rather than volunteering my hours because "It'll look good on an application" or "Jesus would like this" or "To make momma proud" i volunteer because i want these individuals to have the shot they never were guaranteed, and i want to help make their reality a brighter one. We are all just dots hurling around the sun, put ego's aside and help one another out, make your time hurling around the sun have meaning.
