Change it

She said

Draw it on the board,

Let your thoughts be free.

I said

Coach, it's not that easy.

She said

Why not?

You can change it

Shape it into what you want it to be

So I changed it

I changed the woman in my mirror

My way of thinking

My way of seeing

My way of feeling

My way of dreaming

I changed it from why is it this way

To this is why it is this way

Then back to why is it this way

Why is it this way, when there is a better way?

So I changed it

Like the flip of a switch

I started looking at life

A different way

The drive to school that next day changed

I saw the trash on the streets

The dirty water someone was drinking

The homes that were not safe to live in

The people asking for your spare change

I didn't like what I was seeing

So I changed it

Tired of being the follower

I became the leader

I helped people see what I was seeing

I helped people feel what I was feeling

Then

Next thing I know

They were helping me change what I was changing.

Together we fill potholes

The ones in our roads

The ones in our education

The ones in our community

The ones in our minds

Together, we are changing it

Today I walked up to coach

I said

I changed it

I changed the way things worked around here

She said

What about the rest of the world

They're still out there

Needing someone like you

To help them along

I said

No

They need someone like you

Someone to inspire them

To be the change

That they want to see
