Change Will Come
Change Will Come
I rejected the deterioration of my grandfather’s health,
hating life’s cruel betrayal of consistency.
When he went from hospital, to nursing home, to grave,
I wrestled with the facts of goodbye,
and I learned to loathe change.
Despising the thought of divergence
from the path I’d paced my whole life,
I became disappointed at how the world continued to spin
without the presence of such an important man.
In this disappointment emerged an impossible battle:
Fighting the inevitable;
Hating the truth:
That life goes on with change.
I struggled with this for a while,
trying to reign in the events around me,
tying myself to the ground,
all for the attempt to be stationary,
but to no avail.
I came to accept this,
that life cannot be detained.
Death comes and people leave.
It does no good to dwell on the past,
and only when one accepts the consistent inconsistencies of life
can living truly occur.
