Changing the Trap

Words, Words, and more Words

Shouted from all directions.

Walking, sitting, trying to keep up.

We get caught in this cycle-

Always giving never getting.

A grade, a number, a stat.

No longer faces,

No longer names,

No longer stories,

Just a desk, a test, a grade.

Add in the drama,

Add in the heartbreak,

Add in the sleepless night.

On top of the course load

You wonder how we stay alive!

When caught up in the future game,

We forget… we all forget.

This is a box that should have memories.

This is a hall we should know.

This is a place that should be a comfort

Instead of the prison it’s thought to be.

Context aside, we are caged birds who sing;

Our songs aren’t about equality, but certain freedoms-

The freedom to be a kid,

The freedom to dream,

The freedom to make mistakes.

We sing about the here and now that seems to be forgotten

In the fast paced world that wants us to grow up.

This time is said to be the best of our lives,

This time is said to be the beginning of our future,

This time is supposed to be lived,

but it is spent worrying about what is to come.

Take a breath.

Laugh and smile.

Tell our story to the world.

No longer numbers, we can change the common focus.

When the fast paced game is up,

We are not trapped,

But living a dream others say is impossible.

We can say we live in the moment and that

High School actually sets us free.
