The Character of a Nation

From greats in the nation and loyal hearts,
America has grown,
To a nation of people that here as we stand,
We still believe in our own.

From the jaws of hell to the mountain tops,
We fought for what was right,
And so we thought, it had to be,
To feel our country’s might.

With our backs to the wall,
We had to be sure, so as not to over-react,
For when we were through, all that we knew,
We knew we couldn’t take back

We are a nation born of the words,
Of founders way back then.
What would they see in the land of the free,
‘Were they here to try again?

Would they cry on the graves,
Of lives that were lost, And think it was all in vain?
Or would they see, In the land of the free,
The eagle would fly again?

We took a vow at the birth of the nation,
To provide for all that came,
The question is now for the next generation,
Are we here to say the same?

We have at our core a character true,
That’s true of us all and not of the few,
That no man alive should take for granted,
Or question the least, of what we can do.

For it is that we seek, in each one of us,
All that is good and all that is just.
It is at the core where freedoms are sought,
The world will judge the battles we fought.

And it may be someday, the world will see,
That a world without war could possibly be.
And it may be someday, the world will see
Why freedom is dear in the land of the free.
