Character, Not Competence
"What Will Matter" by Micheal Josephson
I couldn't even tell you if it was a real poem
I mean not plagarized or whatever the copyright lawyers argue about
But that's the point
To me it doesn't matter
To me it's the words that matter and how they make me feel
It's the courage and comfort they give to a perfectionist who hardly ever feels like enough
Some would disagree somewhat with its message
Of course competency matters!
How are you going to get a job, life skills
You're gonna be a lazy, good-for-nothing millenial who never got a job and never went outside as a kid
I know
Trust me I know, I'm just too young to comprehend the consequences
I love being lazy
I love being a princess
I love not having a job, living in a wonderful house, having everything I could ever want, and reading my days away
But that's not good for me
I have to do more!
Good for nothing
Lazy
Entitled
Do something
Do anything
Get a job
Be responsible
Adult!
...
...
"What will matter is not your competence but your character."
...
It's going to be okay.
Things are going to work out.
Keep going. I believe in you.
Try again.
...
You can do this.
Remeber who you are.
Remeber your character.
You are defined by you.
You are not defined by the world.
Try again. You can do this.
