The Charlotte Chronicles (Short Story)

This story takes place in a dark room. She sat their on the bed waiting to be taken away. Every second was getting louder and louder. Every minute flew by. Then the doors swinged opened, and a man with chains walked up to her and took her out. He clicked every lock onto her wrist as her hands dripped red blood. She was bruised the night before in critical condition. He took her down a dark hallway. Surrounding her were cells filled with prisoners unable to escape. She noticed that in the distance she could see her cell already ready for her. It was not what she wanted. Never did she think that in her life she would end up in a place like this. The man with the black cape pushed her into the cell and closed the door shut. She was convinced that it was the end. Charlotte knew that anything impossible could be possible if she believed. So this is what she did. She began to sing. She sang so loud that every cell member could hear her. Her voice would penetrate through the walls. It was a beautiful tune. Charlotte always had a stunning voice. The guards began to come to her cell, and said to be quiet, but what they did not know was that the cells were shaking. She started to see the locks opening as if heaven knocked at her door. One by one the prisoners walked out of the cells in disbelief, but Charlotte believed more than anyone ever could. This is The Charlotte Chronicles. After the cell members began walking out she began walking out to. The guards were frozen due to her voice so they could not move. As she walked out of her cell she looked in each one making sure everyone was gone, but she noticed a young man still sitting at the cell. She walked up to him puzzled not understanding why he did not leave. She asked "Why are you not gone?" He said "Im waiting to be released." Then she said "But your free. Do you not see that the door is wide open?" He said "No. I could not see." This man was imprisoned for years. He was in the cell for his many charges. They gave him life imprisonment. In a state of shock the man could not understand why he was given freedom. He never knew freedom his whole life. So finally when he was given it he could not recognize it. The man was not blind. He was just confused. Charlotte began to explain that everyone deserves freedom if they choose it. She said that not everyone can see it because they have not choosen to walk out of the cell to start a new life. She went into the cell trying to pull him out, but he would not move. Literally he chose to stay a prisoner. When Charlotte walked out she wept because she knew she would miss her brother John, but he did not take freedom when freedom was given. The difference between Charlotte and John is that Charlotte believed she could be free even though she did not deserve it, but her brother did not believe.
