Check-In

Dear Depression,

It's your girl- I haven't seen you much lately.

That doesn't mean that you haven't been on my mind

basically all the time

but I'm past you. Right?

I'm not. You destroyed me, stunted my growth, along with your cousins.

They stick around, OCD and ADHD.

Check up on me, keep me on edge, wired,

remind me again and again what you did and what they can do in your place.

What they have done in your place.

And sometimes I see a shadow of you when they're around.

I could say I'm doing better, because I am-

But I would be so much farther along, wouldn't need to write this slam.

I can work with your cousins sometimes, but could I have done that with you?

Well, I'm past you. Right.

Sincerely,

Val

And if I may be so remiss, your presence is not missed. Remission can be bliss.
