chemistry
do they call it chemistry
for the simple definition?
because the dictionary says
it’s the study of the structure and properties and reactions
of substances.
but the way i feel now
with you
has no structure
(it’s wild and raging)
has no properties
(it’s indefinable).
however, it is a reaction
(things coming together to form
others)
all these explosions of flower blossoms
and stardust
and butterflies
creating one single word
both absorbing heat and giving it off
absorbing you
and giving off myself in return.
or do they call it chemistry for its own
substance?
there’s electronegativity
(the ability of atoms to attract others)
you my love
are electronegative
your atoms are pulling on mine and
i think maybe
the simplest beings in both of us
dating back to the beginning
the atoms of the stars that
make us up and
fill your eyes
are drawn towards each other
even after so long.
there’s solubility
(the property of a substance
to dissolve in another)
and it’s a simple thing called
like dissolves like
(the more alike the particles the
higher their solubility)
and while i always thought
opposites attract
you do a pretty good job of
dissolving me
breaking me down into the smallest
things i am
the stardust
the flowers
the butterflies
and absorbing it all into yourself
so all of me is
shining through all of
you.
i remember in the golden days
of youth, of adolescence
when doubts were on our tongues
in our minds
in our hearts
(will we ever use this?
will this ever happen to me?)
back before we knew that
the solutions to our problems
to our doubts
and fears
were inside of us the
whole time.
the elements
and atoms, and reactions
these things are simple
these things are complex
and it occurs to me as i
look at you right now
shining with every bit of brilliance
as the stars in the sky
that chemistry is the simple answer
but also the complex one
but also the right one
just as you are simple and
complex and right
for me.
