Cherishing Freedom

Weeping babes who long for freedom Or those who claim it as a right Might not be as quick to do so If it were up to them to fight. It's easy to take for granted What we, ourselves, don't earn. Viewing freedom as a privilege Is something we have to learn. Anyone can covet And seek what they have not. It takes a humble, courageous heart To cherish what it's got. Why do so many overlook The sacrifices made? It's hard to know what something's worth When the price has already been paid. If we are not careful To value what we've got, If we abuse our freedom By setting it at naught, If we use it as a "right" To do whatever we want Rather than for what it's meant: The right to do what we ought, If we ceaselessly continue To treat freedom like a game, We'll be no longer the land of the free Or the home of the brave. Let's treat freedom as a privilege, Not simply as a right, And let's express our gratitude for it By how we live our lives
