Chicago
A piece of me was gone
Thousands of miles away
Living out a dream
Where I play no part
The ache burned in my chest
A dull fire that couldn't
Be extinguished
I had no home
As long as you were gone
As long as you were away
Sleepless nights
A forgotten birthday
Numb was how I stayed
Until your return day
I counted the hours
The seconds
The days
Until I was able to
See your face
Time seemed to drag
Forever moving slower
For no phone call
Or text message
Could make it
Move faster
You sent pictures
But all they did was
Cause more pain
Because I knew
That it was mistake
That kept us apart
On these days
When Tuesday came
I could hardly breathe
For my love
Was finally returning to me
I stood by the gate
With baited breath
Waiting to see you
Take that final step
Once you appeared
My heart soared
The tears I’d held in
Were released once more
Relief flooded through me
As you came toward
Your arms wrapped
Around me
And held on tight
I felt a soft kiss
On my hair
And knew that
Everything was alright
