Childhood Companion

It feels like I’ve always had her.

I can remember the nights in my bed with her by my head—

My best friend to keep me company.

She kept the monsters I feared at bay— away from me.

Throughout my childhood I have experienced good memories,

Of just her and I, me swinging her by my side.

Her light brown fur is matted and worn.

The dangling heart on her chin is torn.

But that sparkle in her black eyes,

That gentle, bright twinkle that shines is a friendly star in the night sky.

It shows she’s alive— at least in my eyes.

I wrote this as an ode to my favorite stuffed animal as a child. I loved to bring her (yes, she was a girl) with me everywhere when I was young. She is a stuffed dog that’s been through plenty with me- it’s pretty evident by her matted fur. Her presence is still comforting. She is a relic from my fond childhood memories.
