A Child's Lesson on Mortality

Through childish eyes I saw the world,

Focused on the light

For a young mind the future unfurled,

An endless expense and bright.

But something changed, I met a boy

Unfairly dealt his hand

And for all the good that came from his soul

Avery’s story had too soon an end.

At such a loss I hung my head,

My heart I felt had torn

For from this horrid turn of fate

A dark thought took form.

A child no more, I came to see

How death shall take us all

But losing hope and giving up

Will only cause one to fall.

So lift your head and boldly go

Make friends along the way

For no one knows just when you’ll pass

So make someone smile today.
