A Child's Thoughts
I am still very young,
I have time ahead of me.
I can do whatever I want,
I can be what I want to be.
But now it is time
To pick a path knowing,
Society does not have to control me.
Perhaps I become a firefighter,
Running in a big suit though blazes.
With the thick smoke in the air,
As I conquer intricate mazes.
When I get in the truck,
(Although not a kid,
I’d first jump with glee)
I would stick out my head and shout,
“Society has not driven me.”
Maybe I choose to be a teacher,
Teaching kids of different ages.
Knowing that because of me,
They will probably become sages.
I would have zero tolerance
For laziness and slacking.
And I would always shout at students
For sniffling, pen-clicking,
And especially knuckle-cracking.
As I sit to grade papers,
Whatever the grades may be,
I would think to myself with satisfaction,
“Society has not ‘corrected’ me.”
Even though I might have many skills,
What if I don’t want to flaunt?
Maybe I do not feel like working
And the life of a hobo is what I want.
Why not? Moving freely around the town,
And living without a single care
Not to mention the amazing feeling
Of unshaven facial hair.
And while not having bathed
And dozing in the branches of a tree.
I would sit up and say,
“Society has not washed over me.”
I am still very young
With a lot time ahead of me.
Yet I still do not know
What the future will be.
But there are some things
That I know are true
Whatever happens to me in life,
I will choose what I want to do.
And anyone who tries
To take the reins away from me
Will be informed that
Society does not have to control me.
