Cigarettes and Trident
Its days like this one,
When I’d normally call you.
When the nicotine won’t cut it,
And the heavens, they cry blue.
My heart, it’s been mended,
I don’t cry out at night.
My words aren’t curt and cruel,
I don’t care who was right.
It’s not like I miss missing you,
Do not mistake what I mean.
I know a laceration to my arm,
Will no doubt cause me to bleed.
Sure I went through that phase,
Looking for meaning in a pack of gum.
Chain-smoking my way to death,
Staring hopefully at the sun.
My issue lies in my expectations,
But hasn’t that always hung me up?
I guess I assumed I’d return to normal,
‘Cause normalcy shouldn’t be so tough.
But looking back, I’m not looking for love,
That’s like putting the square in the circle slot.
I’ve been searching for my long lost best friend,
It’s like having no lines to play connect the dots.
So when the lightning torches the sky,
And my deleted name lights up your phone;
Know I’m not missing your lips,
I’m missing he who I used to call home.
