A Clarification
Let me be clear:
When I first met you, love was not what I was seeking.
My soul, fiercely independent, longed for open skies, breathless nights-
to dance on the edge of tomorrow and never look back.
My heart would beat for no one-
it couldn’t.
Not when it was already so full, filled to the brim
with stories
and hopes
and dreams
and plans.
And let me be clear again:
that has not changed.
Never will I be the girl who is swept off her feet,
pulled out to sea and sucked into that old abyss
of endless adoration,
of nose-bopping infatuation and honeys and sweethearts and calling someone mine.
Yet here you stand, a quiet smile in the quiet darkness,
and I cannot deny that you have worked your way into my stories
and hopes
and dreams
and plans.
And my stalwart soul could not possibly have imagined
the undefeatable feeling of your fingers laced in mine-
like in those brief moments,
I can conquer anything.
Maybe my heart does not beat for yours, but it does beat with yours
intertwined
two tandem waves beating ceaselessly
against the same indomitable shore.
