The Clash

“Because I love you”

You would always say

your smile seemed to break clouds

a single golden ray

And during these nights

When the stars were so small

I used to wonder

What love was after all

It used to be inky

And murky and grey

And made my throat tighten

Like a bright burning chain

It used to be phone calls

In the middle of the night

Asking “where have you been?”

And “come back on time”

And love was so quick

And love was so harsh

And it was faint, fleeting, bleeding

Was a bright glimmering dark

It was anger and armor

Defending and dementing

The “forever” of “I do”
Fights and retreating

And then you came along

So static, so sane

You saw the flicker of battle

And ended its reign

I was so used to being

on the opposite field

That I hadn’t even realized

What it was like without a shield

And I fought you and you took it

And you still always stayed

“Because I love you”

You would always say
