Cliche
If I accomplish one thing today
It would be for each
And every one of you to
Promise me
That you will try your best
To live your life
Without letting your life
Keep you from feeling
Alive.
Let’s give and take.
Promise me that,
And I will promise you this.
I promise that it’s okay
To be scared.
You can be scared of the future,
Of college,
Of growing up,
Getting a job,
Or just scared of the dark.
I promise that you
Can eat that second cookie,
Or even a third,
And you will be just as beautiful
As you are today.
I promise that you
Can throw your head back
In the purest form of laughter
And it’s even okay if
You still laugh at those fart jokes-
Because I do too.
I promise that it’s okay
If you’re not always okay.
We all fall down sometimes,
But there is always someone there
To catch you.
I promise.
I promise that I understand.
I’ve been stuck in the dark,
And I know that finding the light
Is nearly impossible.
But
If you show me your darkness,
I’ll help you trace the walls with bare hands
Until you grasp the light switch.
I promise that sometimes
Clichés are just what we need.
Things do get better,
Even though grass is always greener
On the other side.
I know you’ll find your frog prince
And live happily ever after,
And yes, every rose has its thorn,
But when we don’t have anything nice to say
It’s best not to say anything at all.
Just promise me that you
Will always remember to smile.
And you will always remember
That smiles are contagious.
And that the only way to live your life
Is to not let your life
Keep you from feeling
Alive.
