Clipped Wings

You’re all puffed up

To distract people from your bones

They’re all snapped and broken

And you can’t bare to have them seen

But when you get scared

When you’re pushed into a corner

You let your walls fall

So your broken glass skeleton

And oil slick blood

Can tear and stick

To the skin of the one

Who dared hurt you

But me

I’m all slick

What you see is a slimmed up version of me

My feathers are sticking to my skin

And I can’t get off the ground

But when I feel threatened

And I want it all to stop

I puff myself up

Just like you do

But instead of protecting me

It only makes me more vulnerable

Because the bits of me

That are hidden

Are put on display

Because maybe if you see me at my worst

You’ll finally leave
