Up Close

Everyone is attractive

from a distance.

Falling in love is swift and seamless

when you never see the object of affection.

Up close, we don’t fall in love.

We stumble into it.

We catch our foot on every crease and bump

and disappointment.

Everyone is a mystery from a distance.

They are an exquisite work of art,

an entity worth desiring,

an unattainable dream.

Up close, they are reality.

As common and cold to touch

as pebbles in the road.

But from a distance,

everyone is attractive.
