Close To the Window

I took a peek through the window of death

It looked horrible to me

They kept it clean with blood and tears

But smudges were all I could see

Kids would laugh

Tossing pebbles at the panes from afar

Ones smarter than they

Kept 'em from close enough to see

Why, why it looked horrible to me

They had a special spot in the pool

Marked with a giant X

That fate would pull me there

To do more than just get wet

Big head, closed up my eyes

Let go of her hand

And plunged into lies

I could reach the toy

Of course I could swim

Halfway down, flipped my mind

Fear struck out from within

Head bobbing up and down

Between life and death

Way too choked to scream

Nothing for me to grab

Nothing below my feet

Faces shaped with horror

Frozen in time

Minds to shocked to think

To throw her a line

Things that mattered most

Blurred through her mind

Trying to get air in

Fighting for time

Too young to leave it all behind

Glimpses of them, screaming by the pool

Washed and rinsed with water

While the sun grew cool

She had sunburn on her back

Fear in her eyes

Water in her mouth

Drowning from lies

The water swallowed the heat from her fight

Raised above and dwarfed her height

Figures ran, leapt in the pool

While the sun above, grew quietly cool
